The Hogwarts Houses and Their Founders – Which is best?

Get Exclusive Access to Our Harry Potter Trivia Page

All the Houses at Hogwarts are great – no one can doubt that. The question is: which is best? An in-depth study of each house is necessary to decide. Already, in the books and movies Gryffindor and Slytherin are most popular, followed by Ravenclaw and lastly Hufflepuff. Here though, there is no bias of the Hogwarts House.
Gryffindor Crest

Hogwarts Houses Founder 1: Godric Gryffindor

Founded by Godric Gryffindor, this house was a place for the bold, courageous, and chivalrous. He built the house on the traits and principles he prized most, as did all the other founders. Godric, besides building the school and house, entrusted the school with his own sword. It was capable of destroying horcuxes after Harry used it to kill the basilisk.

House Gryffindor

Gryffindor is partially so famous because of all the good wizards and witches that called it their home. This includes, Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley. Because the books follow them so closely and we as readers get to see the on-goings of this house, most fans would call it their favorite. This creates a bias opinion against the other houses, especially Slytherin.

Slytherin Crest

Hogwarts Houses Founder 2:

Salazar Slytherin

Salazar Slytherin founded this house. He created it with the morals of cunning, which he himself most prized. Salazar was an accomplished parseltongue. Once the school was read to accept students, Professor Slytherin got in a disagreement with the other founders. He believed that only those of pure wizarding blood should be taught magic. Because of this disagreement, he left the school. Before he departed however, it is rumored he built a secret chamber hidden somewhere within the castle. Within which lurked a monster with the purpose of purging the school of those Slytherin thought didn’t deserve to be taught. Only the rue heir of Slytherin, however, could unleash it.

House Slytherin

Slytherin is most notable the most disliked house because it is the most common producer of dark wizards and witches. That is because most dark magicians have characteristics shared with Salazar. Joining that house doesn’t guarantee you anything, though, for good or for bad; the Sorting Hat almost put Harry into Slytherin.

Ravenclaw Crest

Hogwarts Houses Founder 3:

Raveena Ravenclaw

Raveena Ravenclaw founded this house. She was fond of saying, “Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure!” Hearing that you can guess what key trait Ravenclaw is based on – smarts.

Though, compared to Gryffindor, there are very few mentions of Ravenclaws during the books, a few important characters come up. Luna Lovegood, a strange girl who believes in the existence of some very odd creature, helps Harry in book five, when he travels to the Ministry in attempt to rescue Sirius Black. Cho Chang also appears, who Harry has a crush. This is present through book five, but in book six Harry falls for Ginny Weasley.

Helena Ravenclaw

Raveena Ravenclaw’s daughter, Helena Ravenclaw, remains at the school through her life and beyond. She is the house ghost, and assists Harry in book seven when he needs help finding an item of her mother’s, the lost diadem of Ravenclaw. She reveals it – within a riddle – to be hidden in the storage aspect of the Room of Requirement.

Hufflepuff Crest

Hogwarts Houses Founder 4:

Helga and Helena Hufflepuff

Helga Hufflepuff and her house didn’t come into the books very much. Only a few characters from Hufflepuff are mentioned, though they play a large role. Helena Hufflepuff gives Harry a riddle that unveils the hiding place of the Lost Diadem of Ravenclaw, one of Voldemort’s horcruxes. Without this information, Harry wouldn’t have been able to later kill him.

Cedric Diggory

This boy, three years older than Harry, competed against him in the Triwizard Tournament. He preformed admirably in the first two competitions, scoring number 1 in the second event. However, in the third, he grabs the cup – to win – simultaneously with Harry. What both of them were unaware of at the time was that the cup was a portkey that teleported them to a graveyard. Once there, Cedric is murdered by Voldemort and Harry is forced to fight him.
