Harry Potter – Main Character

Harry Potter, a wizard who survived Lord Voldemort and eventually killed him, is the main character of the Harry Potter series. Besides being a parseltongue (someone who can talk to snakes, which was transferred to him from Lord Voldemort), Harry is an exceptional seeker and Quidditch player. His parents were killed by Lord Voldemort while he attempted to murder Harry. Even though he was just a baby, Voldemort believed he would be his downfall; Professor Trelawney gave a prophecy that spelled the doom of Voldemort or a child born in July.

Sorcerer’s Stone

In book 1, Harry spends his first year at Hogwarts. He is taught basic magic while having to accept the fact that he is famous for surviving Voldemort. During the year – with some curiosity and Hagrid revealing what he shouldn’t have – Harry, Ron, and Hermione discover that the Socerer’s Stone is hidden with the school. Supposedly it was created by Nicholas Flamel (Alchemist) and creates a drink that allows the user to remain immortal. Voldemort is searching for this in his return to power, and Harry stops him.

Chamber of Secrets

During Harry’s second year at Hogwarts, students begin to get petrified (frozen solid). This monster has been let loose from the Chamber of Secrets. Fifty years prior, Hagrid was expelled from the school for doing this. Harry is convinced, however, that it isn’t him. By the time the monster takes Ginny (Ron’s sister) and petrifies Hermione, Harry and Ron feel confident enough to go into the Chamber.  Using parseltongue, Harry opens it to find Tom Riddle’s (Lord Voldemort) diary possessing Ginny and then draining her life force to recreate himself fully. He almost succeeds while Harry is battling the monster (a basilisk) with the help of Fawkes (Dumbledore’s phoenix), but then Harry, who killed the basilisk with the Sword of Gryffindor, uses one of its fangs to stab the Diary and therefore destroy one of Voldemort’s horcruxes.

The Prisoner of Azkaban

The prison referred to in the title is none other than Sirius Black, Harry’s godfather. He escapes from Azkaban (wizard prison gaurded by creatures known as Dementors) just before the start of the book. Because he is Harry’s godfather, also believed to have murdered fourteen muggles ( why he is in Azkaban), and assisted Voldemort in finding Harry’s parents everyone believes he wants to kill Harry. Harry learns this while at Hogwarts and wants to find him, revenge his entire focus. When he does find Sirius however, the former prisoner tells him that it wasn’t him who murdered Harry’s parents but Peter Pettigrew. Then he, with Professor Lupin’s help, turns Ron’s rat into Pettigrew (he’s an animagus, or can transform into one animal). With Harry on their side, Sirius and Lupin intend to take Pettigrew to the people hunting Sirius and clear his name. Unfortunately it doesn’t go to plan, as Lupin turns into a werewolf and Pettigrew escapes. The Dementors next find Sirius, who is only saved by Harry’s patronous (spell to repel Dementors).
